Why do eBikes need special brakes? The key to control and safety on electric bikes

At Bewatt, we design and manufacture high-end electric bikes in Spain, taking care of every technical detail to guarantee a safe, powerful, and enjoyable riding experience. One of the most important—and often underestimated—components is the braking system. In this article, we'll tell you why eBikes need special brakes and what advantages they offer over traditional systems.

More weight, more speed: new challenges for braking

An electric bike is not simply a bike with a motor. The added weight of the electrical system (motor, battery, controller, etc.) and the ability to reach higher speeds place new demands on the braking system. Unlike a conventional bike, an eBike:

  • Weighs between 20 and 30 kg, or even more in cargo or mountain models.
  • Can reach speeds of 25 km/h or 45 km/h (in Speed Pedelec models).
  • Has faster acceleration and more demanding retention capabilities.

All this means that conventional brakes are not sufficient. A specifically designed solution is needed to respond effectively to these conditions.

What makes eBike brakes special?

Brakes designed for electric bicycles have several technical features that make them safer, stronger, and more durable:

1. Larger diameter discs

A larger disc size (180mm, 203mm or more) allows for better heat dissipation, which is key on long descents or repetitive braking. This reduces the risk of fading (power loss due to overheating).

2. Reinforced brake calipers

Calipers usually have 4 pistons (instead of 2), which improves braking power and modulation. This results in more progressive and controlled braking.

3. Special brake pads

Compounds that are more resistant to heat and wear are used, such as metallic or sintered resins, which offer better performance in extreme conditions and greater durability.

4. Motor cut-off sensors

On many eBikes, the brakes include a sensor that deactivates the motor as soon as the lever is actuated, preventing unwanted thrusts during braking.

5. Certified components for high performance

The eBike-specific brakes are approved according to regulations such as EN 15194, ensuring their resistance to the greatest demands of an electric bicycle.

Real advantages for the user

Using eBike-specific brakes is not just a technical issue, it also improves the riding experience:

  • Greater safety, even on steep descents or in wet conditions.
  • Better control on technical terrain or in dense urban traffic.
  • Lower maintenance, thanks to longer-lasting components.
  • Total confidence that braking will be effective regardless of the situation.

At Bewatt, we equip our eBikes with the better

At Bewatt, we choose high-end hydraulic brakes designed specifically for eBikes. We work with leading brands in braking technology such as Magura, Shimano or TRP, ensuring that our bikes are ready for any challenge, whether in the mountains, the city or the desert.

Our commitment to safety, innovation, and performance drives us to take care of every detail, and the braking system is one of them.
