Will I be able to register and use my Bewatt e-skate in the future?
In recent weeks, many customers have asked us the same question:
If I buy an e-skate now, will I be able to register it and continue using it beyond 2027?
We want to explain the current situation with complete transparency.
The current situation in Spain
In Spain, personal electric vehicles are currently regulated under the framework of VMP (Personal Mobility Vehicles), managed by the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT).
This framework is primarily intended for electric scooters and does not specifically cover other light electric vehicles, such as:
- Electric skateboards (e-skates).
- Electric unicycles.
- Other personal electric vehicles of a sporting nature (Segway, OneWheel, etc.).
For this reason, These vehicles cannot currently be permanently approved, even if they meet reasonable speed, weight, and safety limits.
Can e-skates be registered today?
Yes.
As an exception, the DGT (Spanish Directorate General of Traffic) currently allows the temporary registration of non-approved personal electric vehicles, which includes Bewatt e-skates.
This means that the vehicle:
- Can be registered.
- Obtains a registration number.
- Can have mandatory insurance.
- Can be legally driven.
This registration is temporary and valid until January 2027.
So… what happens after 2027?
This is the most important question and the one that generates the most concern.
The honest answer, as of today, is the following:
There is still no published regulation that determines exactly what will happen.
What will happen from January 2027 onwards to light electric vehicles that are currently registered on a temporary basis? This is what is generating uncertainty among users, who are asking us if an e-skate purchased today can still be used normally in the future. Conversations with the DGT: towards a new category (VLP) At Bewatt, we are in contact with the DGT's General Directorate of Vehicles, and together with other brands in the sector, we have shared the existing regulations in various European Union countries, where this type of mobility already has a specific framework. In this context, we are collaborating to move towards a possible new vehicle category: VLP – Personal Light Vehicle. The objective of this category would be: - To clearly differentiate this type of electric skateboard from the traditional electric scooter. - To establish its own technical framework, adapted to its characteristics. real.
- Create a specific certification system for this type of vehicle.
At Bewatt, we are closely monitoring this regulatory evolution and actively collaborating to ensure our products fit correctly within a clear and stable future regulation.
Is it worth buying an e-skate now?
We believe it's important to answer clearly:
- Today, it's possible to register an e-skate and use it legally.
- The current registration is temporary (until January 2027).
- There is no indication that these vehicles will be banned.
- The regulatory trend in Europe is to regulate and organize, not eliminate, this type of mobility.
What currently exists is an evolving regulatory process, and we consider it essential to explain it honestly so that every customer can make an informed decision.
